What is the connection between luxury and sexual pleasures?
Luxury always had to do with money, but nowadays it only has to do with money and wealth when actually- the word’s history is only partially monetary.
Dating back to the 1300s, the French luxurie simply meant ‘sexual intercourse’; by the 1400s the meaning expanded to include lasciviousness and sinful self-indulgence. There are a few records of luxury being used to represent sensual pleasure at the 14th century, but the following 300 lack that meaning all entirely. As of the late 17th century and on there are various accounts of luxury representing indulgence of what is costly and the enjoyment of anything that is beyond life’s necessities.
So what do you think? Is sexuality beyond life’s necessities?
The French may seem to think that it is!
